Cotton faces two recurring threats in every season: early-sucking pests — aphids above all — that stunt seedlings and transmit stress, and grass weeds that compete for nutrients through the critical early canopy phase. A workable cotton protection program therefore has two simple legs: a sucking-pest spray plan and a post-emergence grass-weed cleanup. This guide sets out both legs with products from the BNSD export range, at Chinese registration label rates.
Aphids: Two Registered Options
Cotton aphids colonise seedlings from the first true-leaf stage. Colonies cluster on the underside of young leaves, sap weakens the plant and honeydew opens the door to sooty mould. Two BNSD products are registered for aphid control on cotton:
Acetamiprid 70% water-dispersible granule (WDG) — a second-generation neonicotinoid (IRAC 4A) with systemic movement, applied at 1.5–2.5 g per 667 m² as a foliar spray. The formulation is a low-dose water-dispersible granule: a 4 g sachet treats up to two mu, which keeps handling simple for smallholders and accurate for larger operations. Packs run from 4 g×1000 sachets up to 100 g×80 jars.
Acephate 30% suspension concentrate (SC) — an organophosphate with contact, stomach and systemic action, applied at 150–200 g per 667 m². It remains a cost-effective choice where aphid pressure is high and a broader knockdown is needed. Supplied in 280 g×20 and 1 kg×12 bottles.
Rotation matters: acetamiprid and acephate sit in different IRAC groups (4A and 1B respectively), so alternating them between passes is a simple resistance-management win.
| Pest | Product | Label rate / 667 m² | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cotton aphids | Acetamiprid 70% WDG | 1.5–2.5 g | IRAC 4A, systemic, sachet-friendly |
| Cotton aphids | Acephate 30% SC | 150–200 g | IRAC 1B, broader knockdown |
| Annual grass weeds | Haloxyfop-P-methyl 108 g/L emulsifiable concentrate (EC) | 25–30 mL | Post-emergence, grass-only selectivity |
Grass Weeds: Post-emergence Cleanup
Annual grasses — barnyardgrass, crabgrass and their relatives — do most of their damage before they are obvious. Once grasses pass the two-to-four-leaf stage, competition for nitrogen is already under way.
Haloxyfop-P-methyl 108 g/L EC is a post-emergence, systemic graminicide in the ACCase-inhibitor class. Applied at 25–30 mL per 667 m² as a directed foliar spray, it moves through the grass plant down to the growing points. Crucially for cotton, its selectivity is grass-only: broadleaf cotton is untouched at label rates, which means the product can be used over the top without a shield.
Application notes drawn from general practice:
- spray while grasses are young and actively growing — older tillered plants recover;
- avoid watering or rain within a few hours of application;
- do not tank-mix with other grass herbicides; keep the pass clean and single-purpose.
Program Integration
A simple season shape: scout seedlings from the two-true-leaf stage; spray aphids with acetamiprid when colonies first appear and rotate to acephate on the next pass if pressure persists; run the haloxyfop pass when grasses are at the two-to-four-leaf stage, regardless of the aphid schedule. Keep each decision tied to scouting rather than the calendar, and always follow the label of the destination market — the rates shown here are Chinese registration label rates (667 m² = 1 mu ≈ 1/15 ha).
FAQ
Can acetamiprid and acephate be tank-mixed?
They can be physically compatible, but there is rarely a reason: both control aphids, and rotating them between passes is the better resistance strategy. Reserve tank mixes for genuinely mixed outbreaks.
Does haloxyfop control broadleaf weeds too?
No. Haloxyfop-P-methyl is a grass-only (graminicide) product. Broadleaf weeds in cotton need a separate, cotton-safe broadleaf program — check the destination-market label for registered options.
How many aphid sprays does a season need?
It depends on pressure and natural enemies. Scout weekly from seedling stage; spray at threshold, not on schedule. Rotating IRAC groups between passes slows resistance.
What packing is available for export orders?
Acetamiprid 70% WDG runs from 4 g sachets to 100 g jars; acephate 30% SC and haloxyfop 108 g/L EC ship in bottle formats. All three are part of the BNSD export catalog with OEM pack options on request.
